President Smith to Speak at National Governors’ Assoc. Meeting in D.C.

PULLMAN, Wash. — “New visions of post-secondary education” is the topic
of a National Governors’ Association 2000 Winter Meeting panel in which
Washington State University President Samuel Smith will participate later this
month.

Smith was invited to serve on the Feb. 28 panel in Washington, D.C., by Utah
Gov. Michael Leavitt, NGA chair. In a letter to Smith, Leavitt said the new
concepts should be those that “can better serve the needs of students and
states in the new economic environment.”

Others panelists, Leavitt indicated, may include Robert Mendenhall, Western
Governors University president and CEO; Richard Florida, Carnegie Mellon
University, School of Public Policy and Management; and Sir John Daniel,
Open University of the United Kingdom.

In his 15th year leading WSU, Smith is chair of the National Association of
State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges, the nation’s oldest higher
education association. He is recognized nationally as a leader in distance
education. Smith is a member of the Kellogg Commission, planning for change
and improvement of state universities and land-grant colleges for the 21st
century.

WSU has won awards for its Extended Degree Program, part of the university’s
expanded access effort.
