Jim Hodges exhibition: Unearthed (a work in progress)

Open Aug. 25 through Dec. 12, Jim Hodges’ Unearthed exhibition is a monumental bronze cast of an uprooted tree stump. Majestic yet haunting, the suspended sculpture reflects both the beauty of nature and the lasting impact of human activity. Suggesting the absent tree that once stretched toward the sun, the work invites visitors to consider fragility, renewal, community, and the sacredness of life.

First presented in San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral in 2019, Unearthed now begins its second residency at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at Washington State University. Here, the sculpture offers the academic and regional community an opportunity to engage with themes of memory, place, and our relationship with the natural world.

Eventually, the sculpture’s roots will be buried, returning them to the earth while only the severed trunk remains visible — a powerful symbol of transformation and nature’s enduring cycles.

Location: The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU is located in the Crimson Cube (on Wilson Road across from Martin Stadium and the CUB) on the WSU Pullman campus. Museum hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Closed Sundays, Mondays, and during university holidays and breaks.
