The Washington State University Pullman community is invited to a special screening of The M Factor: Shredding the Silence of Menopause at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, in the Compton Union Building (CUB) auditorium.
The free screening is possible through a special partnership between the Association of Faculty Women, President’s Commission on the Status of Women, and Women*s Center.
This PBS documentary highlights how menopause, sometimes described as a silent epidemic, impacts the well-being of millions of American women. Not only are women struggling with the varied and complex physical symptoms of menopause, but they are also dealing with related stresses of lost wages, upended careers, family disruptions, and emotional chaos.
Amy Sharp, the director of the Women* Center, and Katie Forsythe, scholarly assistant professor of Human Development and past president of AFW, said the cultural norm is for women to deal with menopause alone and to not talk about it. Films such as The M Factor are part of a growing trend to encourage more public conversation around the topic. They encourage everyone who would like to learn more about menopause, whether they have experienced it or not, to attend the screening.
An expert panel Q@A with Kimberly McBride, associate professor in the School of Molecular Biosciences, and Angeline Smith, advanced registered nurse practitioner at Pullman Regional Hospital, will follow the screening.
