HRS Benefits is aware spam emails are often distributed to WSU email accounts, with most emails entitled “Campus Check-In: School News and Announcements!!!” This is not a legitimate WSU email; it is offering a giveaway for faculty and staff, and erroneously reflects that is is from the HRS Benefits Director. IT Abuse has been alerted.
As a reminder, spam/phishing emails regarding retirement topics are also frequently received for non-authorized retirement vendors. The retirement scammers present themselves as a retirement planning professional who offers to set up an appointment for consultation. During the appointment, the scammer asks for personal identifying information, such as a social security number, and appears to have knowledge about your DRS or WSURP retirement account.
What to do if you get the fraudulent email: If you receive one of these emails, don’t open it, delete it and do not set up an appointment. If you wish to have this type of service, contact the authorize retirement plans (DRS, TIAA, VOYA) to request that service at no charge to participants. Be aware that DRS and VOYA do not normally reach out to WSU employees directly, but are responsive to your inquiries. Occasionally, TIAA will reach out to their participants, but it will be very clear that they are with TIAA.
Never give personal information, such as social security numbers and passwords, to someone you don’t know without checking to see if they are who they say.
