From Article to Kit: A workshop on the Scholarship of Assembly with Dr. Jentery Sayers
Dr. Jentery Sayers from University of Victoria’s Maker Lab in the Humanities will be hosting a workshop titled “From Article to Kit: A workshop on the Scholarship of Assembly” in the CDSC Spring Series Friday, April 8, from 9 a.m. – noon in the CDSC (Holland Libraries, 4th Floor).
Most often, academics understand publication in terms of monographs, articles, and book chapters. But what if scholarly communication assumes the form of a “kit”? That is, how might – or how do – academics encourage audiences to assemble materials and arguments using components such as instruction manuals, video, illustrations, code, and tactile media? With questions such as these in mind, this workshop asks participants to imagine their current projects in kit form. Participants will sketch a kit (including a bill of materials) for their selected project, share it with others in the workshop, and discuss the benefits and limitations of imagining scholarship as assembly beyond the page. Participants will also consider the pedagogical dimensions of the kit as a genre, including tensions that emerge between not only process and product but also ways to show, tell, and prompt. For an example kit, workshop participants are encouraged to visit bit.ly/wsukits or bit.ly/wsukits2.
