Duane-Fladland-80SPOKANE, Wash. – Duane Fladland has been named director of the Washington State Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Network. He has more than 20 years’ experience with the SBDC, joined the Washington SBDC as associate state director in January 2010 and had been interim state director since April.

Interim Provost Dan Bernardo announced the appointment, which becomes effective immediately, today (April 16).

KirkPULLMAN, Wash. – Max Kirk has been named interim director of the School of Design and Construction at Washington State University. He has served as assistant director since 2005. He replaces Greg Kessler who is returning to his faculty position.

Kessler to direct School of Mechanical, Materials Engineering

KesslerPULLMAN, Wash. – Michael Kessler has been named Berry Family director of Washington State University’s School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering. He comes to WSU from Iowa State University where he was a professor of materials science and engineering.

“This is a critical time for the school, as we are dramatically growing our programs and increasing the number of engineering graduates in the state,” said Candis Claiborn, dean of the College of Engineering and Architecture. “I am confident that Dr. Kessler’s leadership style and expertise are the right fit for this important position.’’

Newell to lead conferencing unit

PULLMAN  – Longtime conference manager Kelly Newell has been named director of Professional Education at WSU.


Newell’s appointment to replace John Thielbahr, who recently retired, was approved by WSU President Elson S. Floyd on Jan. 15.


 “I feel very fortunate that we have someone of Kelly’s experience, talents, and work ethic to take over the director position,” said Muriel Oaks, dean of the Center for Distance and Professional Education.

PULLMAN – The WSU College of Business has announced that Darrel Muehling will head the School of Hospitality Business Management as interim director following the retirement of Terry Umbreit, who has lead the department for 24 years. The new leadership change will take effect in June.

Muehling, who has been with the CB since 1985 and has served as chair of the Department of Marketing since 1997, will work with the college administrators to ensure that the leadership transition is smooth and seamless for students and faculty.
