Applications open for SURCA 2022 undergraduate research poster presentations

Washington State University undergraduates can submit abstracts now through Feb. 22 to present posters on March 28 at the annual Showcase for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (SURCA) 2022.

“SURCA 2022 will give students from every major, campus, and year in college the chance to share the results of their efforts with a mentor that made original intellectual or creative contributions in their field,” said Mary Sánchez Lanier, assistant vice provost. SURCA is overseen by the Office of Undergraduate Research, part of the Division of Academic Engagement and Student Achievement in the provost’s office.

In-person event in 2022

WSU is planning to feature the work of around 200 students at the annual event. Students will make presentations and be judged in any of nine categories covering all disciplines, such as the sciences and humanities. Awards will be made to top presenters in each category. Novice to highly experienced student researchers are eligible to participate. In spring 2021, SURCA was held using a virtual format but the 2022 event will be held in person.

“We encourage all students and their mentors to examine the SURCA website and apply to participate in the event,” Sánchez Lanier said.

An online form for judges is also open. Faculty members, post-doctoral students, and community experts are needed to evaluate student presentations at SURCA.

“We will need nearly 200 judges to meet the SURCA demand,” Sánchez Lanier said.

SURCA is part of WSU Showcase. Showcase is a WSU tradition with several events spread across several days, including a poster session featuring research by faculty, staff, and graduate students. SURCA is the annual event for undergraduates.
