Officials Suggest Alternatives for Campus Transportation

PULLMAN, Wash. — Now that Wilson Road leading to the Compton Union Building – a traditional campus transportation hub — has been closed by CUB construction, Washington State University and police and parking officials are suggesting alternatives for people looking to drop off friends and family members.

WSU Police Chief Steve Hansen said, “The key thing to keep in mind is safety.  When looking for alternate locations, think about what hazards you may be creating when you are dropping off or picking up a friend.”

Parking and Transportation officials suggest that people plan meeting spots at less congested areas on campus; use cell phones to reduce wait times; or use the transit system to get to and from campus. Passengers may ride Pullman Transit free by showing their Cougar Cards. There are also a variety of park-and-ride locations around Pullman for car-poolers and bus-riders.

Officials stress that there is no access to Wilson Road west of Stadium Way without proper permits. It is also illegal for drivers to enter pedestrian malls such as Library Road and Veterans’ Way without proper permits. Drivers also must not wait in fire lanes or red curbs.  Congestion in these areas can create a major safety hazard if a fire truck or ambulance needs to get through.  Violators may receive a citation. It is also illegal to stop in roadways or block bike lanes. Drivers are also urged to keep bus pullouts clear.

“We’re sorry to see that the top of Wilson Road will no longer be a key rendezvous point of campus,” said John Shaheen, director of Parking, Transportation, and Visitor Center. “Fortunately, we have a tremendous transit system that can help get people to and from campus.”
