WSU alumna and poet laureate to visit WSU

The WSU Black Women’s Caucus announced an evening with Mona Lake Jones, a poet laureate and WSU alumna, at 6:30 p.m. on Feb 25.

The evening, to take place in the Compton Union Building Ballroom, includes dinner and a presentation by the African-American writer. Tickets are $10 and reservations can be made by Feb. 22 through the Women’s Resource Center at (509) 335-2572 or by e-mailing drosmith@wsu.edu.

Jones has served as poet laureate for the City of Seattle for five years and presently holds that title for Washington State’s King County. She has traveled extensively through the country speaking to education institutions, civic groups, conventions and celebrations about issues of culture and diversity. As a motivational speaker she uses her poetry to inspire audiences.

She has received the Langston Hughes Award for literary contributions to the arts and the Blackbird Literary Award for a published author who has also given time to the community.

The author of the books “The Color of Culture” and “The Color of Culture II,” Jones was one of 12 women featured in the national Distinguished Black Women Calendar. She also published “Essence Magazine” and has recently released the CD “Poetry Dancing on Music” featuring her spoken work.
