Alma Flor Ada and F. Isabel Campoy, both scholars devoted to arming children with knowledge, will speak at Washington State University Vancouver’s Annual Sherry Vaughan Distinguished Lecture in Education on March 3.
The 7 p.m. lecture will be in the Student Services Building, Room 110, and is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will follow.
Ada, an emerita professor from the University of San Francisco, founded the Journal of the National Association for Bilingual Education and has authored numerous award-winning children’s books, many of which touch on issues of identity, deciding for one’s self what is right and finding ways to improve the world.
Campoy is a scholar devoted to the study of language acquisition. She first published in the field in 1973 after receiving degrees in philology from Universidad Complutense in Madrid, Spain, Reading University in England and University of California, Los Angeles. She seeks to provide children the key to interpreting the world in a fun, challenging and affirming way.
Sponsors of the lecture include the U.S. Department of Education, Title III TEAMS Program, the Sherry Vaughan Distinguished Lecture in Education series and the WSU Vancouver Department of Education.
The TEAMS (Teams in ESL for Achievement in Member Schools) program provides full tuition scholarships for English as a second language coursework.
TEAMS is the result of a cooperative effort between WSU Vancouver and several southwest Washington school districts, including Battle Ground, Evergreen, Hockinson, Kelso, Longview, Vancouver and Educational School District 112.
Sherry Vaughan retired in June 2001 after 18 years of service to WSU. She was an associate dean for the College of Education in Pullman and, most recently, a director of WSU Vancouver education programs. Vaughan died of cancer in 2003.
