Vancouver Honors lecture discusses the science of Hollywood

VANCOUVER, Wash. — WSU Vancouver will host a nine-part lecture series on the science of Hollywood as part of the university honors program.

The series will be divided into five scientific topics – genetic screening/databasing, global warming, disease: emerging infectious diseases, brain injuries and techno-identity/cyborgs – and will include the screening of films and lectures by WSU faculty members. All films and lectures will be at 7 p.m. in the Multimedia Classroom Building, Room 6, and are open to the public.

The genetic screening/databasing events include the film “Gattaca” on Sept. 2 and a Sept. 9 lecture with WSU faculty members Steve Sylvester and Will Cushwa. Events on global warming feature the film “Day After Tomorrow” Sept. 16 and a Sept. 23 lecture with WSU faculty member Susan Harder. The film “Outbreak” will highlight the emerging infectious diseases topic Sept. 30, followed by an Oct. 7 lecture with WSU faculty member Barry Hewlett. The brain injuries segment will include an Oct. 14 showing of the film “Memento” and an Oct. 21 lecture with WSU faculty members Mike Morgan and Bill Griesar. The series concludes Oct. 28 with techno-identity/cyborgs and the film “I, Robot.” No lecture is scheduled.
