All persons who work at heights are required to have training in fall protection. Washington State defines any height greater than 4ft  to be working at heights with a Fall Protection Work Plan required for heights greater than 10 ft.  FREE Fall Protection Authorized User training is offered by EH&S regularly. The warm summer weather has arrived. There are a few things to keep in mind when enjoying outdoor activities and or working outside during the heat. Be aware of the signs and symptoms of heat stress, dizziness, thirst, nausea or vomiting, irritability and exhaustion are all signs of heat stress.  It is important to apply sunblock as recommended, take breaks in the shade, and to drink plenty of water. Remember to keep cool and enjoy the summer fun!

WSU departments looking to hire student employees are invited to host a table at the Student Employee Job Fair taking place Monday, Aug. 18, 3-5 p.m. outside on the Glenn Terrell Mall.  Participation in the event is free for all WSU departments.

Setup will be 2:30-3 p.m. and takedown 5-5:30 p.m.

All departments must have two people who have been trained in inputting hours for hourly staff and reviewing gross pay for departmental employees. You cannot access DEPTPAY without this training. Authorized access to DEPPS is a prerequisite to attending this course. Originating in Pullman, this course is available through Academic Media Services. This course takes place from 1:30-3 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9.

Don’t forget to register for the second annual Color Me Coug 5K! The run is untimed, so don’t worry about how fast you are—this run is all about fun! Jog, walk or dance the course as color stations send a rainbow of colored cornstarch into your path. By the end of the race, your white Color Me Coug shirt will be colorful masterpiece! Are you interested in participating in a breastfeeding research study being conducted at Washington State University? We are looking for women with infants between 1-3 months of age who are breastfeeding or pumping milk at least 5 times per day. Participation will require donation of human milk, saliva, and urine samples from you and a fecal sample from your infant. Each participant will receive a $50 Visa gift card. This study has been reviewed and approved for human subject participation by the WSU Institutional Review Board.

The WSU Organic Farm will be on the Mall again this week.  Come on by and stock up for the 4th of July weekend.  There will be plenty of carrots, peas, and even cabbage this week for your summer salads.  The stand will be open 11 a.m. -1 p.m. and then down at the Pullman Farmer’s Market from 3:30-6 p.m.

Did you know throwing away batteries increases the release of harmful substances into our soil and water sources? Beginning July 1, CUB patrons can now recycle batteries at the CUB Information Desk.

The CUB will accept all types of batteries, with the exception of car batteries.

In March, WSU Provost and Executive Vice President Daniel J. Bernardo selected the book Garbology, by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Edward Humes, as the 2014-15 Common Reading book. It is important to teach kids how to build their own healthy and successful future. At Cougar Kids Camp, July 7-11 will be dedicated to growth and key experiences that build a solid future. Activities this week consist of bike safety clinics, teambuilding exercises, fitness classes and learning about nutrition. The second overnight of Cougar Kids Camps is this week and campers of all ages are welcome to participate.The overnight is optional and not included in the price of the regular week. Sign up your Cougar Kids today! You can choose between morning, afternoon and all-day sessions. Extended morning and afternoon hours are also available for free. The Summer BBQ on the Mall features lunch and free entertainment in the sun on July 2. The fresh air event takes place between 11:15 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. on the Glenn Terrell Mall across from the CUB. These events will occur each Wednesday through July 23. This week’s menu offers Smoked German Sausage with sauerkraut, a Vegetarian Garden Burger, and a Turkey Burger. The Office of Research invites the WSU community to attend an appreciation reception for Nancy Magnuson as she steps down as Interim Vice President for Research. She assumed this title and all affiliated responsibilities in May 2012 and will be “passing the torch” to Dr. Chris Keane effective July 2014.

Join us in thanking her for two years of outstanding contribution and commitment to research at WSU at a reception being held in her honor on Monday, June 30, in Lighty 405, 2-4 p.m. A recognition will be at 2:45pm and refreshments will be served.
