Chip Hunter resigns as dean of WSU Carson College of Business

Chip Hunter has announced his resignation as the dean of Washington State University’s Carson College of Business, effective July 3, 2023. Hunter will join Temple University as the dean of the Fox School of Business and the School of Sport, Tourism, and Hospitality Management on Aug. 1, 2023.

“Dr. Hunter has been a strong leader for the Carson College of Business and Washington State University,” said Elizabeth Chilton, provost and executive vice president. “President Schulz and I have greatly appreciated Chip’s steadfast commitment to the university and his impactful leadership during his nearly nine-year tenure as dean.”

Hunter and his leadership team empowered the faculty and staff to design and implement The Next Carson Coug program, resulting in the largest undergraduate curriculum revision in 25 years. Over the same time, the college dramatically grew its online master’s programs, serving working professionals throughout the Northwest and beyond. Building on this demonstrated success in online education, he guided the college in providing effective business classes and career support during the global pandemic.

Effective July 1, 2023, Provost Chilton has named Deborah (Debbie) Compeau as interim dean for the Carson College of Business. Compeau will serve a two-year term, and a national search will launch in August 2024 to hire the next permanent dean.

Compeau has served as the Carson College of Business’s senior associate dean for faculty affairs and research since August 2018 and the Hubman Distinguished Professor of Information Systems since 2015.

“I am grateful for Dr. Compeau’s willingness to serve as interim dean for the Carson College of Business,” said Chilton. “She has been an instrumental senior member of Dean Hunter’s leadership cabinet, and I am confident she will be able to continue the positive trajectory and momentum of the college, including The Next Carson Coug program.”

Before joining WSU in 2015, Compeau held faculty positions in Canada at The University of Western Ontario (2000–2015), University of Calgary (1998–2000), and Carleton University (1991–1998). Her research focuses on the interaction between people and information technologies (IT) in organizations. Recent projects have focused on the adoption of IT in healthcare settings. Her research has been published in the leading journals in information systems, MIS Quarterly and Information Systems Research, as well as other high-quality journals.

Compeau was named a Fellow of the Association for Information Systems in 2018. She served as associate editor for Information Systems Research (2000–2002) and associate and then senior editor for MIS Quarterly (1998–2005).

The Carson College of Business is focused on equipping undergraduate and graduate students to lead enterprises successfully.

Experience lies at the core of the Carson College of Business curriculum. In classrooms that simulate enterprise environments, in the organizations of corporate partners, and in locations around the world, Carson students learn by doing. The curriculum bridges disciplines and cultures. Successful business leaders travel to campus to share their expertise.

In a world where business spans national boundaries, leaders who understand global industries and cultures achieve the greatest gains. The Carson College of Business prepares students to succeed with an international experience requirement. The college offers unique, faculty-led study abroad programs in which a faculty member travels with a group of students overseas. Students can enjoy the comfort of taking classes taught in English by a familiar instructor, while immersing themselves in a new culture.
