Four Washington State University women’s athletics teams and three men’s teams received perfect single-year Academic Progress Rate scores in the latest report from the NCAA.

For the 2020-21 academic year, women’s cross country, women’s golf, women’s swimming and women’s volleyball, along with men’s basketball, men’s cross country and men’s golf earned perfect single-year APR scores of 1,000.

“While the world is beginning to wake back up as we emerge from the pandemic, challenges remain,” WSU Faculty Athletics Representative Nancy Swanger said. “The accomplishments of our student-athletes as they have navigated their sport and their virtual/hybrid/in-person classes are nothing short of remarkable.”

APR is a team-based metric that accounts for the academic eligibility and retention of each student-athletic for each academic term.

Teams receive one point for each student-athlete receiving financial aid staying in school and another for them remaining academically eligible. A team’s total points are divided by the number of points possible and then multiplied by 1,000 to tabulate their Academic Progress Rate. The NCAA further tracks accountability by looking at each team’s four-year APR. Teams must maintain a four-year average APR of 930 to complete in championships.

The women’s cross country team has the highest four-year APR mark at WSU with a perfect 1,000, followed by women’s volleyball at 995 and women’s golf at 991. Among men’s teams at WSU, men’s cross country and golf are tied for the top spot at 980, followed men’s basketball at 970.

The WSU football team recorded a four-year average score of 959, with the most recent single-year score of 969 matching its highest output over the past four years.

Across the university, six programs saw their four-year APR scores improve with the latest report, with two recording the same score.

More information on this year’s APR scores can be found on the WSU Athletics’ website.
