Bindler continues fight against childhood obesity

SPOKANE — Ruth Bindler, professor for the College of Nursing at WSU, will now have additional time to focus on her research on childhood obesity thanks to the receipt of WSU’s Cougar Gold Scholar Award. The new award program, established by the Office of the Provost, gives leading scholars the opportunity for extended and concentrated scholarly work over a period of three academic years.

“The activities Dr. Bindler has proposed will foster the development of a multidisciplinary approach to treating and preventing adolescent obesity,” said John Roll, associate dean for research for the College of Nursing.

WSU Scientist wins grant for work on addiction

PULLMAN — A WSU scientist has been awarded more than $4 million from the state’s Life Sciences Discovery Fund, for efforts to develop programs for treatment of substance abuse and mental illness in Washington’s rural areas.

John Roll, associate dean of research at the WSU College of Nursing in Spokane, was awarded $4,048,617 for his project, “Program of Excellence in Rural Mental Health and Substance Abuse,” which aims to develop treatment protocols tailored to the state’s rural residents.

Moving into new College of Nursing

Two years after groundbreaking, the WSU College of Nursing recently moved into the new Nursing Building on the WSU Spokane Riverpoint campus.

 

The college’s 600 or so Spokane students will begin classes there in spring semester, and the building will be dedicated sometime in the spring.

 

The $34.6 million building first received a legislative appropriation during the 2003-05 biennium. The building’s 89,000 square feet house state-of-the-art distance learning classrooms to support the college’s statewide mission; a nursing practice laboratory; technology for patient simulation; computer and multimedia laboratories and classrooms; research team space for data analysis; and offices for college administration, support … » More …

Start a new hobby or brush up on your old kayak skills by participating in Intro to Whitewater Kayak or a Kayak Roll Session.

The Intro to Whitewater Kayak course will take place on October 18, October 23, and 25 and will teach the basics of White Water Kayaking from certified instructors.

The three day progressive course will start at the fundamentals of gear needed for kayaking and will end with an introduction to kayak movement.
