After helping thousands of students afford college, Seattle investor and philanthropist Gary Rubens will fulfill a lifelong personal goal and graduate from WSU this spring.

Since its inception, Cougar Cage has helped a dozen projects receive funding totaling nearly $425,000.

WSU President Kirk Schulz spent much of his State of the University address Tuesday outlining steps that were being taken to help the university emerge as the best possible place to learn, work, and conduct research.

The new, competitive funding program matches private donors with worthwhile WSU projects pitched by students, faculty and staff in a format modeled after the popular entrepreneurial TV show ‘Shark Tank.’

In recognition of his lifetime business achievements and enduring contributions to education, research, technology and the arts, Mark Pigott will receive an honorary doctoral degree during Fall Commencement on Dec. 7.
