SPOKANE, Wash. – Steve Gleason of New Orleans, philanthropist and former professional football player, was honored at Gleason Fest in Spokane on Saturday, Aug. 8, with the Washington State University Alumni Association (WSUAA) Alumni Achievement Award in recognition of the work he and Team Gleason do to raise awareness and find a cure for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

First Cougar Gold Scholar Award presented
Ruth Bindler, professor for the College of Nursing, will have additional time to focus on her research on childhood obesity thanks to a WSU Cougar Gold Scholar Award.
The new award program, established by the Office of the Provost, gives leading scholars the opportunity for extended and concentrated scholarly work over a period of three academic years.

PULLMAN, Wash.—A WSU Puyallup event planner, a WSU Pullman graduate student and the WSU Health Advocates have been selected to receive WSU Martin Luther King Jr. Distinguished Service Awards.
WSU honors a select group of individuals and organizations annually with the Martin Luther King Jr. Distinguished Service Award for their work in promoting equity and diversity.
This year’s recipients will be recognized during WSU’s Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration, at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15 in the Compton Union Building Jr. Ballroom.

The more than 7,000 Backpacks for Hope collected at WSU for children who were victims of two Gulf Coast hurricanes have been delivered. On Tuesday, Oct. 11, displaced students at Mary Hull Elementary School in San Antonio received backpacks, and autographs from Steve Gleason, amidst a fanfare of song and cheer. Gleason, a former WSU football player and member of the New Orleans Saints, led the effort through his One Sweet World Foundation.Students from the school will also have the opportunity to write journals about their storm experiences.
