Through Nov. 22: Feminist author subject of medical exhibit

lit-prescripSPOKANE, Wash. – The life of a writer whose physician discouraged her from having a career is the subject of “The Literature of Prescription,” a traveling exhibit from the National Library of Medicine on display through noon Nov. 22 at the academic library at Washington State University Spokane.

Writer Charlotte Perkins Gilman, born in 1860, wrote a short story, “The Yellow Wallpaper,” that was seen as an indictment of the medical profession and the societal restrictions on women’s professional and creative opportunities. The story was rediscovered by feminists in the 1970s.

The exhibit is comprised of six panels of photographs and paragraphs about Gilman’s life. Library hours are 7:30 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Thursday; closes at 5 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday; and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday.

More information is available on the national library website at https://www.nlm.nih.gov/hmd/about/exhibition/literature-bookinfo.html.
