MLK Week events happening Jan. 19–23

Several events honoring the enduring legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. are taking place at Washington State University Jan. 19–23.

With Jan. 19 celebrated as a university holiday, WSU faculty, staff and students also will have numerous opportunities to participate in the National Day of Service. WSU’s Center for Civic Engagement has a complete list of projects happening throughout the week that are in need of volunteers, with more information available online.

This year’s MLK Keynote Celebration is happening at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 22 inside the Compton Union Building Senior Ballroom on the WSU Pullman campus. The event will also be livestreamed.

Paula Groves Price, a nationally recognized scholar and dean of the College of Education at North Carolina A&T State University, will serve as the keynote speaker. Winners of this year’s MLK Distinguished Service Award — recognizing outstanding individuals across the WSU system whose work reflects values of connection, service and community — will also be honored during the event.

The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art will host “Writers Give Voice: Reading and Open Mic” from noon to 1:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23. This year’s theme is ‘A Call to Consciousness,’ with participants reading poems and other selected works. Prospective speakers are asked to sign up for a reading slot online.
