Following a comprehensive search, Assistant Vice President for Federal Engagement and Advocacy Glynda Becker-Fenter has been named Washington State University’s next vice president of external affairs and government relations.
“We are fortunate to have Glynda’s leadership as we look to secure sustained support from our state and federal partners, and improve our engagement in the Puget Sound region,” said President Kirk Schulz. “Her experience and success in legislative advocacy will go a long way in ensuring that WSU receives the assistance we need to advance strategic priorities and fulfill our role as a modern land-grant institution.”
Since joining WSU in 2012 as director of federal relations, Becker-Fenter has formed meaningful relationships between the university and members of congress, their staff, and executive agencies. Under her direction, the federal relations team helped WSU secure funding for the new USDA ARS building, saw increases in funding supporting WSU students and research, and positioned WSU faculty and staff as leaders in their fields testifying before congress.
“Washington State University is a world-class institution with a best-in-class government relations team,” said Becker-Fenter. “I’m excited to take on this new role that allows me to work across the university and our campuses to continue to generate support for our land grant mission. We have a lot of great opportunities ahead of us, and I am looking forward to working with our team to continue to serve the university and my home state of Washington.”
WSU’s Office of External Affairs and Government Relations is responsible for engaging and communicating with local, state, and federal officials and agencies to realize the university’s public policy goals. The 10 person team collaborates with various stakeholders and constituents across the state and nation to ensure important WSU initiatives receive the support needed to further the university’s academic and service mission.
Becker-Fenter takes over for Interim Vice President Chris Mulick, who assumed the role following the departure of Colleen Kerr in March 2023.
“Chris has provided steady and sure leadership over the last eight months,” Schulz said. “We are immensely grateful for his willingness to take on those additional responsibilities and appreciate his commitment to advancing WSU.”
Becker-Fenter will transition into her new role on Jan. 16. When asked what her first order of business will be, she indicated she plans to visit several WSU locations to better understand how the government relations team can continue serving students, faculty, staff, and research moving forward.
