With the launch of a new academic year, WSU Pullman is celebrating the inauguration of its first‑ever chancellor.

Students, faculty, staff, and members of the community are invited to join the inauguration celebration for Elizabeth S. Chilton, set for Aug. 18 in Bryan Hall Auditorium. This celebration is a part of WSU Pullman’s Week of Welcome, a series of events designed to welcome new Cougs to campus. Chilton originally joined WSU as provost and executive vice president in July of 2020 and began serving in a dual role in January 2022.

“This is a momentous occasion for both the WSU system and the flagship campus,” said Kirk Schulz, WSU system president. “The creation of a dedicated leadership structure for WSU Pullman brings the campus into alignment with the rest of the system, and allows us to better serve our students and communities.”

In her role, Chilton will be responsible for the day‑to‑day operations of the campus. By combining the Chancellor and Provost positions, WSU will be able to capitalize on the expansive scholarship, creative activity, and research happening at WSU’s flagship campus.

As Chancellor, Chilton is leading the development of WSU Pullman’s first strategic plan, which will prioritize inclusion, diversity, equity, and access. The plan, which will be finalized this fall, will include an emphasis on student success and multidisciplinary research activities, including the arts. Chilton intends to use the strategic plan as the catalyst to launch a comprehensive facilities plan, the first for the campus in a decade.

Inauguration ceremony attendees will have the opportunity to hear from University leadership about what this next phase in the OneWSU evolution means for WSU. A celebratory reception will follow the ceremony at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU.
