SPOKANE — WSU Spokane will present “Powering the Palouse: connecting people, products and ideas,” a symposium of seven presentations delivered by Landscape Architecture students 1:15-4 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, on the Riverpoint Campus in the Phase I Classroom Building in the Design Institute Gallery and room 148 at 668 N Riverpoint Blvd.
The presentations will explore the benefits of re-introducing passenger rail between Spokane and the Pullman/Moscow area in response to shifting global trends, particularly associated with energy, water and climate change.
Featured presentations will include a look at the Palouse as a bioregion for the purposes of identifying which communities can contribute to the overall nutrition of the region; the residential and industrial growth of Rosalia, Garfield, and Oaksdale; new station designs for Pullman, Spokane (using the existing multimodal station) and Spokane’s University District. The presentations will also take a look at the use of alternative energy potentials for the Palouse that could power the train, automobiles, and heat homes and businesses.
“The students have realized the future will present them with very different challenges and opportunities than those that exist today,” said Bob Scarfo, associate professor at the WSU Spokane Interdisciplinary Design Institute. “They have really taken on the projects as their own, interviewed community members and elected officials and are prepared to discuss the revitalization of the future.”
Following the presentations, students will gather in the Gallery and be available to show their work during the poster session and answer any questions regarding their projects. The event is free and open to the public.
Visitors to campus are encouraged to use public transit; STA Route #29 serves Riverpoint. Bike racks are located by every building, and the Centennial Trail provides pedestrian/bike access. Drivers should use the meters in the green parking lots, or park in the Pay and Display lot (cash only) located just off of Spokane Falls Boulevard to the west of the South Campus Facility at 412 E.
