Francis Morgan-Gallo receives Willi Unseold Award

PULLMAN – Francis Morgan-Gallo, Challenge Program Coordinator at University Recreation, was honored with the 2009 Willi Unseold Award for his contributions to the field of Experiential education.

Since 1998, the Willi Unsoeld Award has been given annually by the Northwest Region of the Association for Experiential Education to a member practitioner who has made a profound and lasting impact in the field of experiential education in the Northwest.

This award is named in honor of Willi Unsoeld, a man who touched many people through his unique spirit.

Willi was well known as a mountaineer and was one of the first Americans to stand atop Mt. Everest. He was a passionate experiential educator, who believed the highest value in education was the development of supportive relationships among people, and the ultimate goal of all education is to help people treat each other better.

The recipient of the award is recognized to be a professional educator in the Northwest region who exemplifies these same traits. He or she emulates Willi Unsoeld’s unique spirit and passion in transformative education.

“We are very pleased that Francis’s skills as an innovative educator have been recognized with this prestigious award” remarked Kathleen Hatch, Executive Director of University Recreation.  “Francis has been instrumental to creating meaningful experiential education opportunities for students as well as measurable learning outcomes now embedded in many programs and services.”
