Chancellor discusses women in leadership

RICHLAND — A series of monthly events highlighting women’s achievements in the professional world continues Nov. 7 at WSU Tri-Cities.

Vicky L. Carwein is the next Women In Leadership speaker. She will talk about her leadership experience and provide suggestions for professional development strategies. Her presentation starts at 12 p.m. in the West Building Atrium, 2710 University Drive, Richland. Admission is free and open to the public. The event is coordinated by students in the WSU Tri-Cities Business Club.

Carwein has been Chancellor of WSU Tri-Cities since September 2006. She arrived shortly after the campus received Legislative authority to expand into a full, four-year university. She led the efforts to recruit and raise scholarships for the first freshman class, welcoming more than 100 freshmen in August 2007.

Carwein earned her doctorate in nursing from Indiana University. She began her academic career at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where she was a nursing professor for 23 years and served as Dean of the College of Health Sciences for six years. She previously was president of Westfield State College in Massachusetts and was chancellor at University of Washington Tacoma from 1995-2004.

The monthly Women in Leadership presentations will culminate in March 2009 with a celebration of National Women’s History Month.
