Doctor to discuss medical radiation exposure

RICHLAND — Dr. Fred A. Mettler, one of the nation’s leading experts on medical management of radiation accidents, will speak Oct. 7.
 
Mettler will present a lecture on “Medical Radiation Exposure: The Largest (and Growing) Radiation Source in the U.S. — Should there be a Concern?”
 
Mettler will deliver the Herbert M. Parker Foundation fall lecture at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, in the Battelle Auditorium in north Richland. The lecture is co-sponsored by WSU Tri-Cities. Admission is free and open to the public.
 
The Herbert M. Parker Foundation for education in the radiological sciences was created in 1987. It was incorporated into the WSU Foundation in 1997 as an endowment based at WSU Tri-Cities.
 
Mettler is professor emeritus at the Department of Radiology at the University Of New Mexico School Of Medicine, where he was department chairman from 1994 to 2003. Mettler is also the chief of radiology and nuclear medicine at the New Mexico Federal Regional Medical Center.
 
He has authored more than 300 scientific publications, including 18 books on the medical management of radiation accidents, the medical effects of ionizing radiation, radiology and nuclear medicine.
 
Mettler has served as an expert on radiation effects and accidents for the United Nations Peace Corps, Centers for Disease Control, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, World Health Organization, International Atomic Energy Agency, International Agency on Research on Cancer and the governments of Japan, Costa Rica, Peru, Panama, and Poland.
