Leadership class, citizens build local playground

Construction of a playground for residents of the Bellevue Apartment Complex  is taking place Thursday through Saturday this week. The effort has been organized by Willie J. Heggins, assistant professor in the WSU College of Education.

Students enrolled in Heggins’ Leadership and Service class during the past year applied what they learned about civic engagement by collaborating with apartment managers to design a safe place for residents and neighbors to play. They raised money for the project with help from local service organizations.

Because most of his students are gone for the summer, Heggins said this week’s hands-on work will be done by Rotarians, Kiwanians, and volunteers from the Community Action Center. He expects the work to be completed by Saturday afternoon. Work will begin at 10 a.m. each day at the apartments located at 1750 SE Johnson Rd. Volunteers are needed. Please come and help out if you can.
