PULLMAN – Washington State University’s student-run Cable 8 Productions has been honored by College Broadcasting Inc. (CBI), the nation’s premiere student national broadcasting organization.
Cable 8 Productions was recognized in the Best Student Media Website and Best News Reporting categories at CBI’s national convention, Oct. 26-29 in St. Louis, Mo.
“Winning in the Best Student Media Website category is very meaningful to our team,” said Margaret Russo, a senior public relations major from Tacoma, Wash., and vice president for marketing communication and alumni affairs for Cable 8 Productions. “Students wrote and designed the site and totally maintain it,” Russo said. The lead designer of the site, Rose Buster, is a senior fine arts major from Bremerton, Wash.
Cristina E. Romento and Rachel Padget took second place in the Best News Reporting category for their report “Who Belongs in America.” The story dealt with immigration issues facing college students in a post-9/11 world.
“We constantly kept asking people for constructive criticism,” said Romento, “which is the best advice I could give anyone.”
Romento is a senior broadcast news and production major from Vancouver, Wash., and vice president for special projects for Cable 8 Productions.
Padget is a senior broadcast news major from Nampa, Idaho, and vice president for television for Cable 8 Productions.
Romento and Padget were recipients last spring of a Telly Award and a Gracie Allen Award for a video feature about WSU alumna Theresa Schulz and her organization, Women’s Enterprises International.
Modeled after a real network TV station, Cable 8 Productions has a five-member executive board, 40-member staff, and more than 200 students responsible for anchoring/hosting, production, operations, sales and promotion.
College Broadcasting Inc. said it received 448 entries in 24 categories. Other university award winners included:
