WSU Vancouver receives gift from Hewlett-Packard

VANCOUVER, Wash. – Hewlett-Packard recently donated $10,000 to WSU Vancouver’s Southwest Washington MESA (Math, Engineering, Science Achievement) Program.

This gift will help further MESA’s mission of bridging the gap in academic achievement by enriching educational opportunities for African American, Native American, Latino and female students who are underrepresented in mathematics, engineering and science careers. MESA helps today’s students excel in K-12 schools, ensures their readiness for success in college and provides exposure to promising careers in math, engineering and science.

Senior Vice President of Digital Photography and Entertainment, Larry Lesley, sponsored the donation on behalf of Hewlett-Packard, whose support of MESA reaffirms Hewlett-Packard’s commitment to diversity and inclusion within the community it operates.

The Southwest Washington MESA Center was established in 2004, and currently serves approximately 150 students in six public schools within Southwest Washington. These schools have MESA Teacher/Advisors who teach the award-winning MESA curriculum, “Real World Mathematics Through Science,” which is designed to encourage students to be actively involved in learning mathematics as they explore a science topic in which mathematics is being used. MESA Teachers/Advisors also mentor the students and provide tutoring services on a weekly basis. Five of these MESA schools serve students utilizing the after-school MESA model, while one school integrates the MESA curriculum within the classroom during the school day.

Southwest Washington MESA collaborates with volunteers from various businesses throughout the region to provide exposure to science, math and engineering-based fields. These volunteers speak to students about real world experiences and provide them with field trip opportunities where students can clearly see mathematics, engineering and science applications being utilized in the business world.
