Call for nominations for prestigious award

Nominations for the Women of Distinction and Women of the Year awards will be accepted through Thursday, Feb. 2.

The awards are presented annually by Washington State University during National Women’s History Month in March. The WSU President’s Commission on the Status of Women coordinates the selection process on behalf of the president’s office and other university women’s groups.

The theme for WSU’s Women’s History Month 2006 celebration will be “Women, Builders of Communities and Dreams.” Awards will be presented at the Women’s Recognition Luncheon on March 21.

The Women of Distinction awards are presented to women in five categories: alumna, WSU employee, WSU student (graduate or undergraduate), woman outside WSU and woman of service (military, fire/EMT, police, etc.). All nominees for Women of Distinction awards are eligible for the Woman of the Year Award, whether or not they are recognized as a Woman of Distinction.

For the 2006 edition, a new category has been added to extend recognition to women of service. “The new category was added this year to highlight and encourage nominations from these and other areas in which women have distinguished themselves in their personal accomplishments and contributions to society and women’s lives, ” said Teri Ockwell, chair of the Women of Distinction and Woman of the Year Award committee. “Traditionally, nominations have not been received for women in these fields, though there are many at WSU who are alumna, employees and students, as well as the women outside of WSU who excel in these fields.”

Nominees in any of the categories should have distinguished themselves in their careers, leadership and/or public service; should have contributed to the growth and success of others, especially women; and should not have received this award within the past five years.

WSU faculty, staff and students, as well as community members are encouraged to submit the official forms with their suggested candidates.

“My goal is to increase the number of nominations,” Ockwell said.

Nomination forms will be delivered via campus mail to WSU employees. Nominations can also be submitted electronically though a link on the President’s web page at http://www.wsu.edu/president, or by contacting Ockwell at csw@wsu.edu.
