The Washington State University community will celebrate scholarship, research and the arts — and honor those individuals who excel in these endeavors — during the daylong Showcase 2005 on Friday, April 1. The day’s events will include a poster session, lunch and lecture and evening awards banquet.
“WSU employees responded enthusiastically to this opportunity to honor their colleagues,” said professor Fran McSweeney, vice provost for Faculty Affairs and chair of the Showcase 2005 steering committee. “Many posters were submitted, and reservations for lunch and dinner closed early because of the strength of demand. This year’s Showcase should be a truly memorable event.”
The annual celebration will begin at 9 a.m. in the CUB ballroom and 200 series rooms with the opening of the Academic Showcase Juried Poster Session. Nearly 200 projects by faculty, staff and students will be displayed in poster or alternate formats for the campus community to view at no charge. Presenters will be on hand to talk about their work between 10 a.m. and the close of the session at noon. Complementary refreshments will be available.
The president and provost have approved the use of one hour of work time for all WSU employees to attend the poster session.
Some also have made plans to understand things unseen at the University Luncheon, noon-1:30 p.m. in Webster B16. Yes, that’s a classroom. After picking up a box lunch, those attending will be dazzled by a lecture/demonstration by physics professor Mark Kuzyk, presenter of the 2005 Distinguished Faculty Address. His talk is entitled “From Black Holes to the Internet: How We Use the Scientific Method to Understand the Mysteries of Things Unseen.” No more reservations are being taken for the luncheon.
The evening’s Celebrating Excellence Recognition Banquet will honor the outstanding achievements of WSU faculty and staff. The 2005 recipients of the Eminent Faculty, Marian E. Smith Faculty Achievement, Sahlin Faculty Excellence, and President’s Employee Excellence awards will be honored, as will be the presenter of the Distinguished Faculty Address, those promoted to Regents Professor and those who are newly tenured and promoted.
A musical piece composed especially for the occasion by School of Music and Theatre Arts faculty Greg Yasinitsky and Jennifer Scovell will debut at the banquet. It will be performed by Jazz Northwest, the resident WSU faculty jazz ensemble that also includes Horace-Alexander Young, Dave Jarvis, David Snider, David Turnbull and Bryan Werry. Opening entertainment will be provided by Crimson Revue, a 20-student group of singers, rhythm section, horns and sound directed by Scovell. Carol Salusso, from the Department of Apparel, Merchandising, Design and Textiles, is the group’s wardrobe consultant.
The banquet begins at 6:30 p.m., preceded by a social at 5:30 p.m., in the Beasley Coliseum. Reservations are no longer being accepted.
