WSU federal funding requests presented in D.C.

WSU representatives were in Washington, D.C., Feb. 9 and 10 to present the university’s federal funding requests to the Washington state congressional delegation and ask for the delegation’s support.

The top eight requests are:

1) A facility for the Agriculture Research Services scientist co-located in the bioscience buildings. The federal government previously appropriated funds for design and early construction of one of the buildings in the planned WSU Pullman bioscience complex. WSU seeks funds to complete this bioscience building.

2) Distributed education technology and library funding for the WSU Intercollegiate College of Nursing in support of its move to the Riverpoint campus alongside WSU Spokane.

3) Sustainable Department of Energy funding for research and the Ph.D. program in WSU’s radiochemistry department. (Please see related article on radiochemistry beginning on page 1 in this issue)

4) Development of a variety of research in bioproducts and bioenergy.

5) A Center for Recruitment, Promotion and Advancement of Women in Science and Engineering to identify and implement actions to increase the number of tenured women faculty.

6) WSU/UW joint Technology Gap Investment Program to provide small grants to faculty to make patented knowledge attractive for licensing. (Please see related article on technology transfer on page 6 in this issue)

7) Continued Department of Defense funding for micro engine research.

8) Continued funding of the joint WSU/UI Salmon Restoration Program.

In addition to these priorities, WSU is pursuing federal funds for agricultural research, a rural jobs initiative, research and development of food packaging for the military, electric power grid security research, a joint WSU/UW policy consensus center, a center for community education and urban studies at the Salishan Learning Center near Tacoma, research on transportation, and the WSU Beach Watchers outreach program.
