WSU to participate in RecycleMania Challenge

Washington State University will enter into a 10-week competition among 49 universities from across the nation beginning Jan. 30 in an effort to collect the most recyclables as part of the fifth annual RecycleMania Challenge.

As a participant in the recycling competition, WSU will be matched up against a list of universities that includes five Pac-10 schools and Yale, Harvard and Brown in collecting recyclables from residence halls, on-campus apartments and dining halls all across the Pullman campus. On a weekly basis, each university will report the amount of recyclables collected against the amount of trash generated on their campuses in an effort to produce the best recycling-to-trash ratio.

At the conclusion of the competition on April 9, a RecycleMania trophy will be presented to the best-performing university, which will also be entitled to place a one-page ad in competing campus newspapers to proclaim its bragging rights.

University Recycling is encouraging participation in the competition from all WSU students, staff, and faculty. Weekly updates on the competition will be posted in the Daily Evergreen and banners and sandwich boards reminding everyone to recycle will be posted across the campus.

RecycleMania is organized and operated by university recycling coordinators and supported by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s WasteWise program.
