Gov. Locke to visit Pullman Oct. 28

Gov. Gary Locke will visit the Washington State University campus in Pullman Thursday (Oct. 28) to honor the 2004-2005 Washington Promise Scholarship recipients.

The program will run from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at the Lewis Alumni Centre. Charlene Jaeger, WSU’s vice president for student affairs, and student regent Brady Horenstein will represent the university. Jim Sulton, director of the Higher Education Coordinating Board, is also scheduled to attend.

Locke created the Washington Promise Scholarship program in 1999; legislators made the program permanent during the 2002 legislative session. Nearly 35,000 Promise Scholarships have been awarded; 948 recipients of Promise Scholarships currently attend WSU.

To be eligible for the scholarship, low- and middle-income students must either rank in the top 15 percent of their class or earn a combined score of at least 1,200 on their SAT or at least 27 on their SCT on their first attempt. Recipients receive $1,176 a year for two years.
