Pullman Police to Enforce Parking Codes on College Hill During Home Games

PULLMAN, Wash. — Safety concerns related to emergency vehicle access on College Hill during home football games have prompted the City of Pullman to announce they will begin parking laws enforcement emphasis patrols in the area during home football games this fall.

Pullman Police Chief Ted Weatherly said the planned step up in parking enforcement patrols on College Hill results from past instances in which illegally parked vehicles have threatened the city’s ability to get emergency vehicles into the area during home football games, thereby creating potential safety problems for local residents, drivers and pedestrians.

“Our goal is to make football weekends safer for the public and to make sure that emergency vehicles can access this popular area of the city on these weekends,”  Weatherly said of the planned new emphasis on enforcing parking codes in the area.

He said drivers of illegally parked vehicles in selected areas of College Hill will be issued only written warnings during the first two WSU home games in Pullman this season on Sept. 18 and Oct. 9. However, any vehicle blocking or impeding emergency vehicles will be towed.  The department will be ticketing errant parkers thereafter, Weatherly said.

The written warnings will include information on alternate parking options and Park and Ride locations, city officials said.  Flyers announcing the stepped-up parking enforcement emphasis also will also be made available in other locations of the city, on the WSU campus, and within the Greek community.

“Pullman parking enforcement will be on College Hill to help inform people where the alternative parking areas are,” Pullman Police Officer Carl Bell said of the first two home game weekends. “We want to make as smooth a transition for visitors to Pullman as possible.”

The emphasis patrols will focus on existing no-parking zones, where city police have often shown leniency in ticketing parked vehicles during home games in the past.

Specific locations to be the focus of the renewed emphasis on parking enforcement during home games are:
