Graphic designer David Carson to visit WSU April 6-9

The Art Student Union at Washington State University will present nationally renowned graphic designer David Carson as he visits the Pullman campus April 6-9.

The principal of David Carson Design, Carson has offices in New York and Charleston, S.C. The studios work for the cultural, corporate, music and others has been recognized by the New York Type Directors Club, American Center for Design and I.D. Magazine.

An opening reception is set for 6 p.m. April 6 in Gallery III of the Fine Arts Building, on Wilson Road across from Martin Stadium. Here, Carson will critique the work of WSU electronic imaging students.

On April 7, Carson will present an evening lecture and presentation of his work at 6 p.m. in the Fine Arts Auditorium. A question-and-answer session will follow. The Bookie will have copies of Carson’s books available for purchase, including “Trek: David Carson, Recent Werk,” “The Book of Probes,” “Surf Culture: The Art History of Surfing” and “Fotografiks.”

Carson will be the guest speaker at a noon Art a la Carte session April 8 in the Compton Union Building, Room 123. The lecture will focus on his photography and newest book Trek. The Bookie will provide copies of the book for purchase. A book signing will follow.

There will also be a noon brown-bag lecture on Carson’s work and books April 9 at the University of Idaho in the Commons Horizon Room.

Carson’s work has been published in more than 150 magazine and newspaper articles around the world, including Eye, Idea, The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Metropolis, Domas, Wired and Emigré, which devoted an entire issue to his work. A feature in Newsweek magazine said Carson “has changed the public face of graphic design.”

He graduated with honors and distinction from San Diego State University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in sociology. Carson lectures around the world, as well as at colleges throughout the country.

The week’s events are sponsored by the WSU Art Student Union, Office of Campus Life, Department of Fine Arts and the Visual, Performing and Literary Arts Committee.
