Laila Miletic-Vejzovic, head of Washington State University’s Manuscripts, Archives and Special Collections, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar Grant for lecturing and research in library science at the Research Library in Zadar, Croatia, during a six-month sabbatical that begins this month.
Miletic-Vejzovic will initiate, develop and implement a project to provide access to the most significant collection among the Research Library’s holdings, the Dalmatica Collection.
She will also initiate and develop a digital initiatives program at the same library, making access to manuscripts and photographs in hard copy and electronically readily available. In addition, she will lecture in library science at the Library School in Zadar.
Miletic-Vejzovic is one of approximately 800 U.S. faculty and professionals who will travel abroad to some 140 countries for the 2003-04 academic year through the Fulbright Scholar Program. Established in 1946 under legislation introduced by the late Sen. J. William Fulbright of Arkansas, the program’s purpose is to build mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries.
Miletic-Vejzovic has been with WSU Libraries since January 1989. Throughout her tenure at WSU she has been professionally active internationally. Her numerous awards include a Fulbright Scholar Grant in 1992, two International Research and Exchange Board (IREX) grants in 1997 and in 2000, and a Fulbright Senior Specialists Grant in 2002-03.
In 1996, she was selected by WSU to attend the Summer Institute for Women in Higher Education Administration at Bryn Mawr (Pa.) College.
Miletic-Vejzovic has served on numerous WSU committees. In 1997-98 she was a president-elect of the Association of Faculty Women, and in 1998-90 she served as AFW president.
She also is serving a term on the Washington State Historical Records Advisory Board.
