PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University will present an April 15 jazz concert at 8 p.m. in Kimbrough Concert Hall.
The free concert will feature the WSU vocal jazz ensemble VOJAZZ, directed by Jennifer Scovell, faculty member in the WSU School of Music and Theatre Arts, and the WSU Jazz Big Band, first place winners at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, under the direction of Greg Yasinitsky.
VOJAZZ will perform Scovell’s arrangement of “Somewhere” from “West Side Story,” and the Jazz Big Band will present the premiere of “Arrows” composed by Spencer Morris, a graduate teaching assistant in the WSU School of Music and Theatre Arts. His composition is a Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival award winner. Featured soloist for “Arrows” will be vocalist Jessica Abbott.
Also receiving first performances will be “Indiana,” arranged especially for vocal jazz quartet and big band by WSU student Ryan Jesperson and “Europa,” arranged for saxophonist Seaula Tupái and the Jazz Big Band by David Snider, a graduate teaching assistant in the WSU School of Music and Theatre Arts. The band will also perform two selections from the Maynard Ferguson library — “The Opener,” arranged by Snider, and “Take the A Train,” arranged by Don Sebesky.
Soloists will include vocalist Jaime Miller, pianist David Servias, trumpeters Matt Reid and Brendan McMurphy, and saxophonists Scott Ryckman and Jason Larsen.
