PULLMAN, Wash. — John Slaughter, National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering president/CEO, will deliver the keynote address at the WSU Faculty Honors Convocation on March 28.
Slaughter will speak about “Diversity: An Opportunity, Not a Challenge.”
The convocation is set to begin at 4:10 p.m. in Bryan Hall Auditorium and is part of World Class. Face to Face. SHOWCASE, a March 28-29 event that brings many WSU advisory groups, volunteers and future Cougar families to the Pullman campus.
Slaughter is a former director of the National Science Foundation, president of Occidental College in Los Angeles and chancellor at the University of Maryland, College Park. His long and distinguished background as a leader in the education, engineering and the scientific communities includes serving in 1979-1980 at WSU as provost and academic vice president.
He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Tau Beta Pi Honorary Engineering Society.
WSU President V. Lane Rawlins will preside at the convocation, during which Eminent Faculty, Sahlin Faculty Excellence and Marian E. Smith Faculty Achievement awards will be presented.
Also, the Distinguished Faculty Address presenter and the new Regents’ Professors will be honored. In addition, the holders of Distinguished Professorships and Endowed Chairs and candidates for tenure and promotion will be introduced.
Open to the public without charge, the convocation will be videostream archived, available starting March 31 at www.wsu.edu/faculty-staff.
Also part of featured events is WSU Jazz SHOWCASE, open to the public without charge in Beasley Performing Arts Coliseum. It is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. March 28. Presented by the School of Music and Theatre Arts, Jazz SHOWCASE includes performances by Crimson Revue and Vojazz, both directed by Jennifer Scovell, and the WSU Jazz Big Band, directed by Greg Yasinitsky.
