Statement from WSU President Samuel Smith Concerning Matthew Shepard’s Death

The following is a statement from Washington State University President Samuel Smith
concerning University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard, a gay man, who has died after an
apparent hate crime beating.

“Both personally and on behalf of the WSU community, I express sorrow on the death of Matthew
Shepard, the University of Wyoming student. His death is, unfortunately, a reflection on those in our
society intolerant of difference. We shall never forget the terrible violent actions leading to his passing. We
at WSU stand strengthened in our resolve, that our university is better because of diversity including sexual
orientation, gender and ethnicity. Our work to assure a diverse university community continues steadfast.”
