WSU stands against poverty during Poverty Awareness Week 2016

Each year, the WSU Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) invites students, staff, faculty, and community members to help raise awareness about poverty issues during the week before Thanksgiving break, November 13-19, 2016. Throughout this week, the CCE partners with WSU departments, student groups, and community organizations to hold a variety of events and activities.

This year, a total of 17 different events have been planned, including food and supplies drives, documentary showings, discussions, community service projects, and much more. Monday will feature a Poverty Simulation at 6 pm, and Tuesday will feature a Hunger Dinner at 6 p.m. On Wednesday, donate gently used business and formal clothing on the Mall, join a Public Square discussion at 3 pm, take part in a food repackaging service project at 4 p.m, and attend a webinar about accessing food or the documentary Starfish Throwers at 6 p.m. On Thursday, buy a cup of hot chocolate from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. to support Family Promise of the Palouse, and at 5:30 p.m., attend the documentary Lost in the Crowd or attend a workshop about domestic violence titled “In Their Shoes.” All week long, Cougs are invited to participate in a variety of CCE-led and self-led service projects, which can be found on cougsync.wsu.edu. Students can also enter the #CougsAgainstPoverty raffle for a chance to win a Be the Change mug!
