Extreme weather is no longer an occasional inconvenience; it is a predictable risk. Cold snaps, heat waves, and high winds affect our campuses differently, but they share one thing in common: small actions by building occupants can prevent large losses.
Across WSU, many weather-related claims trace back to simple, preventable issues, like windows left open during freezing temperatures. Such incidents disrupt operations, damage facilities, and divert resources that could otherwise support teaching, research, and student services.
The good news? Prevention works. When people pause, look, and act early, losses drop significantly.
To support awareness and make action easy, Risk Management has developed simple extreme-weather checklists for use. The checklist below is intended to be used by anyone who works, studies, or spends time in WSU buildings, especially during forecast cold-weather events.
Extreme Cold Weather Building Maintenance Checklist
- Ensure all windows, doors, vents, and other openings are closed and secured.
- Check tall buildings from outside for any open windows (especially upper floors).
- Turn off portable heaters and non-essential electrical equipment when not in use.
Report any known problem items that could present risk due to freezing temperatures to Facilities via MyFacilities or by calling 509-335-9000, such as:
- Areas that appear prone to drafts or cold air leaks.
- Undrained or exposed water pipes in unheated areas.
- Heating systems that are not functioning properly.
- Build-up of snow and ice, especially around entrances and emergency exits.
Facilities teams respond quickly, but they cannot see everything, everywhere, at once. Building occupants are often the first line of defense. A closed window, a quick visual check, or a timely work request can prevent thousands of dollars in damage and avoid disruptions to campus operations.
Extreme weather is inevitable. Damage does not have to be.
