Update to no‑cost Copilot Chat access in Microsoft applications

Microsoft has implemented an immediate change that affects the availability of Copilot features within several Microsoft 365 applications. The update, driven by Microsoft, impacts WSU users who do not have a paid Microsoft 365 Copilot add-on license.

Under this change, Copilot Chat is no longer accessible within Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or OneNote for users without a paid license. Users may continue to access Copilot Chat within a web browser and Outlook, where the tool remains available to all active WSU users at no cost.

Departments may choose to purchase paid Microsoft 365 Copilot licenses for employees to restore access to advanced Copilot Chat functionality within Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. For any questions, please contact Crimson Service Desk at crimsonservicedesk@wsu.edu or 509-335-4357.
