University Communications Mailing Services Tip of the Week

When designing a mail piece please keep in mind the mailability of the piece.

  • Black or dark red envelopes do no process easily through WSU Mailing Services equipment or through USPS equipment.
  • Anything other than a return address, a recipient address, and postage on the front side of your mailpiece may cause a delay in delivery.
  • The minimum size for a mail piece is 5 inches long by 3.5 inches high and the maximum letter size is 11.5 inches long by 6.125 inches high. The maximum size for a postcard is 6 inches long by 4.25 inches high.
  • The recipient’s address should always be parallel to the long edge. If it’s perpendicular to the long edge, the USPS charges a surcharge of $0.21 per piece.
  • There is a maximum thickness for letters and large envelopes. Contact your coordinator at University Communications for help if you have any questions about your design (ucomm.wsu.edu/print).
