Undergraduate researchers present Monday at SURCA 2023

Monday from 3:30–4:45 p.m. in the CUB Senior Ballroom nearly 200 students from four WSU campuses will present more than 160 posters (some virtually) at the Showcase for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (SURCA) 2023, with awards in nine categories to follow starting at 5 p.m. in CUB Auditorium on the Pullman campus. You are invited!

Some of the topics pursued as mentored research, scholarship, and creative activities this year include:

  •  Understanding bitterness in foods and pharmaceuticals.
  • Adaptable pajamas for children with Down syndrome.
  • Developing tools for cybersecurity education and assessment.
  • The age of rocks in our backyard.
  • Maternal mortality in the U.S. for BIPOC woman.
  • Monkeypox and its virulence mechanism.
  • The possibility of pod-specific dialects among transient orcas.
  • Analysis of Latinx parents’ experiences of sending their students off to college.
  • The relationship between tolerance and emotion in a polarized world.

SURCA is the only WSU venue open to student researchers in all majors, every year in college, and all campuses. Up to four levels of awards can be given in all SURCA categories. SURCA this year is the first event in the week-long WSU Showcase. SURCA is hosted by the Office of Undergraduate Research, part of the Division of Academic Engagement and Student Achievement in the provost’s office.
