The Department of Translational Medicine and Physiology welcomes Dr. Laura Bartley, associate professor, and Dr. Erica Crespi, professor, at WSU Pullman, to WSU Spokane on Tuesday, May 13. They will be providing their joint seminar at 12:10 p.m., “Introducing the new Washington State NASA BioS-ENDURES Consortium: Biology in Space: Establishing networks for durable and resilient systems,” in SAC 347 and via Zoom.
The BioS-ENDURES Consortium will be a new NASA-funded program in the state of Washington between UW, WSU, and PNNL. Its focus is innovation, acceleration, and implementation of space biology specific knowledge and technology centered on human-plant-microbiome relationships to enable a durable human presence in low Earth orbit and beyond. Studying fundamental relationships between humans, plants, and their microbiomes under space flight conditions will reveal new biological mechanisms that will address needs for sustainability and risk mitigation in space exploration. BioS-ENDURES has three thrust areas focusing on the effects of spaceflight stressors: Monitoring, Modeling of effects, and Validating approaches to enhance plant and human health in space. This presentation will provide an overview of BioS-ENDURES consortium structure and goals and introduce concepts from initial seed projects.
