The Washington State University Symphony Orchestra presents its Debut Concert of the 2015-2016 academic year on Thursday, October 1, in Bryan Hall Theatre. The concert, entitled “From the New World” features two beloved works of the orchestral repertoire.

The concert opens with Anton Dvorak’s famous Ninth Symphony. Nicknamed “From the New World” because of his time in the United States during the 1890s,  the piece is shaped by the composer’s experiences in America (including his discovery of African-American and Native-American melodies) and his longing for home. These feelings color his music with mixed emotions.

After a brief intermission, the concert closes with George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” featuring Gerald Berthiaume on piano. From the opening clarinet trill to the energized “jazzy” passages, this masterpiece is an American classic loved by all.
