The Gene and Linda Voiland School of Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering Seminar Series

The Gene and Linda Voiland School of Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering department at Washington State University is pleased to invite you to our upcoming seminar Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 1:10 p.m. in Wegner G70.

Oliver Y. Gutierrez is a senior scientist and group leader at the chair of Technical Chemistry II at the Technische Universitat Munchen. He received his doctorate in 2009 from the UNAM (the National University of Mexico), where he was awarded the “Antonio Caso” medal for graduating at the top of his class. In the same year, he received the Alexander-von-Humboldt fellowship and moved to Germany for a postdoctoral position at TU Munich with Prof. Johannes Lercher. In 2011 he was appointed senior scientist at the same chair creating a research group focused on catalysts for industrial applications. His research on fundamental aspects of heterogeneous catalysis combines in situ characterization of catalytic materials with rigorous kinetic analysis and synthesis of catalysts. His current research topics cover mainly sulfide and metal catalysts for hydrotreating and for alternative low-temperature processes.

Topic:
Catalysis for energy-carrier generation, insights into thermal, electro- and photo-catalytic transformations
Catalysis plays a key role in the production of energy carriers and in the development of sustainable technology. Improvement of existing catalysts and developing of new ones rely on the understanding of the chemistry involved in the transformations of interest. This seminar presents three cases of fundamental research on catalysis for generation of energy carriers: hydrogenation on metal sulfides under hydrotreating conditions, hydrogenation on noble metals at mild conditions aided by electrocatalysis, and hydrogen generation via photocatalytic reforming. Advances in the understanding of the reaction mechanisms and challenges for further scientific and technical research are described.

Science confirms torpedo bat works as well as regular bat

Lab tests show the much-hyped torpedo bat offers no real power advantage over traditional designs, with only a slight shift in the sweet spot that may suit certain hitters.
