Marcelo Vargas, PhD — associate professor, Department of Neurology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison — will be visiting WSU Spokane for the TMP Seminar Series. His seminar entitled “Targeting astrocyte-mediated toxicity in ALS” will be in person in the Spokane Center for Clinical Research and Simulation, room 250 and through Zoom on Tuesday, March 12, noon–1 p.m.
While the degeneration of motor neurons is the characteristic feature of ALS, astrocytes undergo a phenotypic transformation that appears to play a key role shaping motor neuron fate in the course of the disease. In line with this idea, astrocytes from diverse ALS models induce the death of co-cultured motor neurons. The presentation will provide an overview of several strategies aimed at reverting astrocyte-mediated toxicity and increasing motor neuron survival in ALS models.
We look forward to you joining us in person (SCRS 250) or through Zoom!
