Five finalist teams will present their solutions to real cases of arbitrary detention in the United States at the free, public Sixth Annual Global Case Competition. The event will take place today at 3 p.m. April 8, in CUE 202.
The work of these team will inform the U.N. Working Group on Arbitrary Detention report to the United States, and in so doing, affect how it may approach future cases around the world. The winner of the competition will be invited to provide their solutions to the U.N. Working Group in Geneva in November.
Roland Adjovi is an Assistant Professor at Arcadia University in historical and political studies and serves as the Second Vice-Chair of the U.N. Working Group on Arbitrary Detention. Mr. Adjovi will be providing the opening remarks at this year’s Global Case Competition. In 1991, the United Nations established a Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) to investigate cases of deprivation of liberty imposed arbitrarily that may be in violation of the U.N.’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This year’s Global Case Competition finalists will be presenting their solutions to real cases of arbitrary detention in the United States. The work of these groups will inform the WGAD report to the United States and in so doing, affect how it may approach future cases around the world. The winner of the competition will be invited to provide their solutions to the U.N. Working Group in Geneva in November.
