Diversity Education’s Social Justice Teach-in with Dr. Peter Boag on October 23,
6 p.m.-8 p.m. in Honors Hall Den.
“Searching for a Rural Queer Past in the American West and Pacific Northwest: History, Historiography, and Method”
This Teach-in is designed to introduce students to the urban-bias in the field of lesbian and gay history and then complicate this by exploring the history of homosexuality and transgenderism in the American West and Pacific Northwest between roughly 1850 and 1920. The lecture also presents students with information about how one researches and theorizes rural queer history.
Dr. Peter Boag is Professor of History at Washington State University where he specializes in western American history and the history of sexuality and gender. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Oregon in 1988 and served on the faculty at Idaho State University and the University of Colorado, Boulder, before joining WSU in 2009. He is the author of three books, including Same-Sex Affairs: Constructing and Controlling Homosexuality in the Pacific Northwest (2003) and Re-Dressing America’s Frontier Past (2011). The latter title received the Organization of American Historians’ Ray Allen Billington Award (2013) for the best book on American frontier history.
